Nowton Park
Nowton Park is one of the largest spaces for walking close to town, set in about 200 acres of woodland and meadows, there is something for everyone here. It is extremely popular with dog walkers, bird watchers and fitness groups as it has a variety of terrains with different length circuits of the site. You can stick to the woods, which have clear tracks, making it suitable for pushchairs, or you can brave the wind and cross the fields and check out various ponds on your way. The ground here does get saturated easily, so when it has been wet, wellies are a great help as none of the paths are paved.
The centre has recently been refurbished and now has fairly decent toilet facilities and a cafe. The opening times are not the same as the park though, so check before you set off on your walk when they will close if you fancy a nice cup of tea afterwards! They serve a selection of snacks and cakes, light lunches and a variety of ice creams. The cafe appears to be fairly small when you go in, but it has an extra room at the back which is sometimes used for meetings etc.
The playground is fenced off to keep dogs out and has a lot of running around space for little ones to stretch their legs. There is a wide selection of swings, slides and other play things to amuse, most of which have recently been refurbished. There are several picnic tables within the play area and just outside.
The car park now has a small charge, about £2 for over 2 hours, or you can buy a season ticket for £15. The park is normally fairly busy most days, but especially at weekends, when it is used by various sports teams. Although there is plenty of space to still enjoy yourself on a busy day.
