The Bay Tree Cafe Bistro
We only discovered this little gem recently, and are fast becoming regulars to this gorgeous little cafe on St John's Street. The Bay Tree is thoroughly baby-friendly, and caters extremely well for a gluten-free diet. They can do all of their sandwiches on gluten-free bread, they have jacket potatoes, and some of their hot meals are gluten free, including their soup. They also have a range of cakes and desserts which I can eat! The staff are incredibly friendly, and willing to make dishes to suit your needs. They can make food for little ones which is just as good as the adults food, just a bit smaller.
From their website:
"The Bay Tree Cafe Bistro has been an integral part of St John's Street, one the loveliest areas in Bury St Edmunds, for more than 10 years.
Being one the oldest buildings in the street and with its subtle interior the bistro offers a balance of cosy cafe and modern bistro. With dining rooms on both the ground and first floors it is deceptively larger that it first appears. Our upstairs room has the addition of a cosy sofa and has a lovely feel with its low ceiling and original beams. Both rooms are available for private evening functions and our upstairs room is a great space for meetings, coffee mornings, book clubs and classes, such as Spanish conversation which currently runs on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and better still our room is free of charge!
Our chef Mark, had years of experience in hotels and restaurants before taking on the Bay Tree. Behind the scenes he and his small team work together on the menus, ensuring that the plates they produce, from the humble sandwich to bistro dishes, are of the best standard & taste.
One thing that sets us apart from many cafes is our offer of two menus. There is much to feast your eyes on and tantilise your taste buds. Choose from a traditional cafe menu offering breakfast, light lunches, homemade cakes & pasties or a regularly changing & slightly more complex bistro menu of freshly cooked dishes from around the world.
Both menus are served with equal care and attention with every dish being freshly prepared to order. Where possible, our ingredients are locally sourced, much supplied by other independant suppliers based in Bury St Edmunds. We are especially know for our lovely bread, delivered to us every morning and some of which is baked just for us so you won't find it anywhere else! We are so lucky, because ingredients we can't find on our door step can be found in our home county of Suffolk and the surrounding area providing some of the best meat, fish, cheese & fresh produced in the country.
Our hope is that our menus offer something for everyone; over 14 vegetarain dishes, low cal/fat options, dishes suitable for gluten free diets and soya milk.
Whilst the kitchen team beaver away Nicola and her team will look after you during your visit. Be it for breakfast, lunch or grabbing a quick coffee or collecting your takeaway, they will endeavour to meet your every need and expectation. Take a look at some of the generous compliments customers have paid us, all of which give us a warm glow :-)
Finally, to complement your meal, we serve excellent fresh coffee and Twinnings tea. Our coffee is raineforest alliance certified, plus a selection of soft drinks, wines and beers.
For youngsters we have 'no added sugar' squashes, we provide kiddie size portions, heat baby food & bottles, have high chairs and a changing mat"
I thoroughly recommend a visit to this wonderful independent cafe in one of the nicest streets in town. You will not be disappointed by the friendly service, great food, and charm. We already have our own favourites on the menu. We have been several times with a few of our friends, and it is a great place for little ones.
